What exactly is The GiveBack?

Hi! I'm sure you're wondering who's behind this organization, and what the vision is behind it. My name is Jibril Hammond; my barbers call me JB, my friends know me as "Jibs', and my family knows me as... well that's between them and I. I was born in Livingston, NJ, and have since then come a long way from there. Literally. I am the youngest boy of 4 older brothers, and a bigger brother to a younger sister. A big family, a loud house, and a love that i was so blessed to encounter at a young age. When I look back at where I am from, and my background, I can see that this is where my love for community and people started. My house was the house in the neighborhood always filled with kids. You could find a handful of children at any time in my backyard, or inside on the game system, nevertheless, my family extended beyond those who lived with me.  It's hard being bored when every room is filled with a brother of a different age, all different personalities, all different interests. From a young age, I developed a passion for education, reading, sports, and almost anything you put in front of me. I was eager to just learn. At 13, I had the opportunity to study at a private, all boys, boarding school in western Pennsylvania. A culture shock is the least you could say. Although I was born in Livingston, I grew up in Newark, NJ for 20 years. A concrete jungle, surrounded by noise, culture, and unfortunately violence and poverty. This experience opened my eyes, and my mind. I saw a life completely different from the one I grew up in and was exposed to. People who thought differently than me, spoke different than me, dressed differently. than me. Although facing challenges being almost 7 hours away at a young age, I matured quickly. I figured out how to balance life, school, friends and family, and even developed my own hustle for funds my parents couldn't afford outside of tuition. I began cutting hair at 14 years old, from Youtube videos, and even "borrowing" the clippers my dad used on us growing up. I charged $10 for haircuts and would slowly become known as the campus barber. I wasn't good, but I wasn't terrible either. Cutting hair was something I was passionate about, because everything I did, I did with excellence. However, college was still the main goal. After thousands of dollars my family didn't have, and sacrifices I wasn't at home to see, I had a tremendous weight on my shoulders. I promised myself that wherever I went, my parents wouldn't have to pay out of their pockets again. Senior year would come, and I'd be awarded a track scholarship to a small Division III school an hour away from high school. Did I mention it was Christian? Fastforward to the end of my 1st year, I had lost my scholarship due to bad grades but had gained an interest I had never experienced before. God. I was raised Muslim, but college, and friends I met along the way challenged my beliefs that were so deeply instilled in me. In 2021, I was baptized, and this decision changed my life forever. I gave my life to Christ, and it is this reason why The GiveBack stands today. I am able to love others, because He loved me first (1 John 4:19). The GiveBack desires to love people the way that they need, because we recognize that everyone has different needs. The vision is the large, but the people are larger. We are the backbones of our community here in Orlando, bringing people together to let them  know that there are resources and people available for them with assistance. Together, we can change the world, but first we will change one community at a time.
